WORKSHOP SERIES 1:  8:45 am - 10:15 am

There is no doubt that the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games will create business opportunities for both new and existing businesses, but will these opportunities be sustainable and what impact will they have on an existing business, if you already own one. This workshop takes a creative approach to firstly identifying what these opportunities might be for new or existing businesses, and secondly explores secondary market niches. Apart from the opportunity identification, it further looks at feasibility and risk assessment by analyzing the market implications of this international sporting event in terms of both the immediate implications and long term business sustainability.

'SELL' is Not Just Another Four Letter Word

People want to buy, they just don’t want to be sold to.  No one wants to be seen as a “salesperson”.  But it doesn’t matter what you do for a living, chances are you need to sell.  You’re likely selling your ideas, concepts, proposals, or the more ‘traditional’ selling of products or services.  You even need to sell yourself!  This high energy, interactive workshop will lead you through understanding why prospects/buyers/decision-makers behave the way they do; the strategies they use to protect themselves; and, how you can take control of the sales process without looking or feeling like a “salesperson”.

In today’s anxiety-ridden, stress-infused world, even a moment of quiet reflection has become a time-consuming luxury most of us just can’t afford. How did we reach this point? How did we lose our direction and sense of control? And, more importantly, how can we reclaim our lives? A Pace of Grace offers lessons to rediscover the essential elements of a life well lived by 1) Purifying our life; 2) Pacing ourselves; 3) Practicing the presence; and 4) Planning a sustainable life.

This workshop will give you time to:

  • Learn 10 Health Rules for sustainable balance
  • Find out how to prevent burnout from the FOG Syndrome of Fatigue, Overwhelm and Guilt
  • Discern what to stop doing, keep doing and start doing to live with a pace of grace.

WORKSHOP SERIES 2: 11:15 am - 12:45 pm

The key to effectively assessing your business for growth, expansion, diversification or selling can all be found in financial analysis. Ratios are a way to evaluate the performance of your business and identify potential problems. Each ratio informs you about factors such as the earning power, solvency, efficiency, and debt load of your business. They are used to measure the relationship between two or more components of the financial statements. This very practical and ‘easy-to-understand’ workshop walks you through exploring your financial statements to look at the following the information hidden therein, including:

  • Leverage ratios: examine how assets of the business are financed

  • Liquidity ratios: determine the capacity of the business to meet current obligations

  • Profitability ratios: how much profit is being generated

Beyond just learning what the ratios mean and how they are calculated, participants will learn how to use these ratios as a true management tool.

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is an exciting new organizational development that is ideal for private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Unlike the traditional problem-based tools and models that focus on what is not working well, AI focuses on what is working well (appreciative) by engaging people in asking questions and telling stories (inquiry). This shift in focus to the positive generates life within the organization/business allowing it to move more effectively towards its goals. Participants will examine the theory behind AI, engage in the ‘5D’ model (Definition, Discovery, Dream, Design, and Delivery), and explore ways to apply AI in any situation – be it private sector, government or a community-based group.

WORKSHOP SERIES 3: 2:00 pm - 3:45 pm
Creating the Strategic Environment

The most sustainable business growth requires focus and strategic planning, however in the words of Michael Gerber, business owners are too busy working ‘in’ the business to be working ‘on’ it.  For entrepreneurs to move away from an operational focus to a strategic one – their house needs to be in order to let go and free their mind to plan.

Apart from examining the process and steps of strategic planning, this workshop looks at identifying the roadblocks that are holding you back; prioritizing how to fix these roadblocks; changing your entrepreneurial mindset (from do-er to thinker/planner) and lasting what tools you need to have in place to begin the process.

Sound business ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR)  belongs to everyone – it is not just for big business or government. This workshop will define CSR in very practical terms and discuss the business case, trends, and challenges of implementing CSR in any organization or business. It will focus on how to develop and integrate a CSR program, outlining a CSR roadmap for values-based leaders seeking to improve workplace and community conditions. You will discuss the CSR roadmap; where your organization is on the roadmap; and, what you might do to advance CSR in your organization – if you have 3 employees or 300.

While women are moving into more senior positions within both private and public sector, there are still few women providing governance at the board level. What are the reasons contributing to this? While there are still, no doubt, barriers to entry, another contributing factor is that women themselves chose not to venture forward into these uncharted waters in the second stages of their careers.

This workshop is a facilitated panel presentation with a dynamic group of women who have been involved with corporate, public sector and community based boards. Hear first hand, their path to the board table - the obstacles - the triumphs  - and, how they have learned to effectively contribute to a board governance model.
